About This Place

Snack-Bar Pao de Lo is a beloved café tucked away on R. da Alfandega 115 in the vibrant neighborhood of Sao Martinho, Funchal. This unpretentious local hotspot has been serving authentic Madeiran flavors for over three decades, operated lovingly by two brothers who have perfected the art of slow-cooked, traditional dishes. The atmosphere here is warmly familiar, a place where both locals and visitors mingle, creating a welcoming and effortlessly friendly environment.

The culinary offerings at Snack-Bar Pao de Lo beautifully showcase Madeira’s rich gastronomy, with highlights that tantalize your palate from first bite. The beloved Prego Em Bolo do Caco stands out as a must-try: tender, juicy beef perfectly nestled in freshly baked bolo do caco bread, which is a regional specialty of soft, garlicky flatbread. Equally captivating is the Biff Snack with Fries, combining crispy fries with a hearty beef sandwich that delivers a comforting, satisfying experience.

If you’re looking to venture further into traditional flavors, the Salada de Polvo offers a fresh, tangy octopus salad, while the Bacalhau Assado Com Feijão Verde E Batata Cozida presents a succulent, slow-grilled codfish that embodies the island’s culinary heritage. For those seeking something off the beaten path, the Squid with Onion Sauce and the Brochette de Boeuf provide delightful bursts of savoriness, slow-cooked to melt-in-your-mouth perfection.

No visit to Snack-Bar Pao de Lo would be complete without indulging in their expertly crafted Ponchas. These traditional Madeiran cocktails come highly recommended; the house special variants — Pescador, Maracujá, Tangerina, and Tropical — are freshly made to order, each vibrant and refreshingly sweet with a balanced kick that perfectly complements the hearty dishes. The Nikita de Frutos Vermelhos is another local favorite for those craving a fruity, indulgent treat.

Guests consistently praise the warm and hospitable service that mirrors the island’s famed friendliness. As Claire Mcardle noted, the staff here are genuine and helpful, even bridging language gaps effortlessly. Regulars like Kretynskie Gugle testify to the authenticity of the food and the slow, patient crafting of meals – a process that truly enhances the depth of flavors. Melissa Pub’s experience highlights the excellent value, with generous portions of bolo do caco sandwiches and expertly mixed cocktails, all at very reasonable prices.

Snack-Bar Pao de Lo is more than just a café; it is a cornerstone of local culture and culinary tradition. Whether you’re seeking a quick, satisfying bite or a leisurely meal accompanied by the island’s renowned drinks, this charming spot delivers a memorable, deeply authentic Madeiran dining experience. It’s the kind of place that invites you to return, not just for the food, but for the heartfelt atmosphere and community spirit that fills the air.

Popped in as the food smelled lovely. Had carne assado which was lovely. Friendly staff and locals helpful as I don't speak portuguese.

Amazing bolo da cacos! The waiter was really nice. We had 5 sandwiches for 22euros. They recommended the Madeira tropical cocktail, which was very tasty. We recommand !

We are surprised in that we have been coming to Funchal for over 15 years and this was the first time we stopped here. We were craving a Prego and were recommended by another local restaurant. The Prego and the chicken picado we had were delicious. We will be coming back often for both now. A unassuming little gem.

Best prego on the island. Amazing poncha, really good picado. Very very local place, inside you can see the same faces every day. It's run by two brothers for over 30 years. Everything is slow cooked and genuine. You have to wait for poncha but it's made to order

Tried many ponchas but this one is really one of the best. Try the tangerine one. Always served with snacks and the waiter makes the experience even better.

As a portuguese ???????? I have to say one thing. This place is the true roots of portuguese. Best food for a fair price. There is a reason why lots of locals come here. Great food and wonder service. My #1
